UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe was sworn in as the 8th Executive President of Sri Lanka today.
Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe was elected as the 8th Executive President after a secret ballot held in Parliament yesterday.
He took the oath in front of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya at the Parliament complex.
Entering active politics with the United National Party in the mid-1970s, he was elected to Parliament for the first time in the 1977 parliamentary election from the Biyagama constituency and was sworn in as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
He was then appointed as the Minister of Youth Affairs and Employment, becoming the youngest Cabinet Minister in Sri Lanka.
Later, he served as the leader of the opposition in Sri Lanka as well as the Prime Minister.
Mr. Wickramasinghe, who returned to parliament as a member of the National List of the United National Party in the last parliamentary election and was sworn in as a member of parliament on June 23, 2021, was appointed as Prime Minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in May 2022, after the resignation of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa due to public protests. was appointed
With the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa as President, Mr. Wickramasinghe became the Acting President on July 13, 2022.
